Arts, Culture & Celebrations

ARTS & CULTURE

Creative expression is encouraged at St Mary's whether it's acting, singing or taking to the stage. The Gospel is acted out by a different class each week at our Friday Assembly.

The junior syndicate (new entrants - year 2) act out the Nativity in our Church each year leading up to Christmas.

The senior syndicate (years 3 - 6) present a major production in the St James Theatre, complete with sound and lighting every second year.

There are various opportunities for the choir to get together and perform including Christmas concerts, remembrance services, Senior Citizen lunch and more.

Each year we compete in the Freeze Ya Bits off Busking Competition as part of the Tussock Country Festival.

In 2023 we attended our very first Polyfest which was an incredible opportunity for tamariki in our Kapa Haka group.

REAP (Rural Education Activities Programmes) run courses for our senior students to work with different artists over a number of weeks each year.

CELEBRATIONS

At St Mary’s School we take any opportunity to get our families and friends in to celebrate, share kai (food) and socialise.

Some of our regular celebrations include: welcome liturgies for new students and their families, Father’s Day Barbecue Breakfast and Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea, Matariki shared Hangi and activities day. We also celebrate Catholic Schools Day with a visit from Mr Whippy and Mercy Day with other Mercy schools in our diocese.
